Chapters

I was supposed to say bye when you told me I was too different

But the chapters kept writing themselves

And I enjoyed letting someone else hold the pen

The spine of the story grew more and I didn’t seem to mind

I was supposed to say bye when you told me you’d marry me

But the dust from interlocked fingers blew into the wind

And I embraced the breeze of unexpected 4AM phone calls

Interchangeable words till dawn lit my mornings anew

I was supposed to say bye when I began praying for you more than I prayed for myself

But I didn’t know that loving someone was lethal

And I sacrificed the intimacy of knowing what you would say before you said it

Hearing footsteps of you leaving yet I still held the door wide open
